Political spectrum quiz

My Political Views
I am a center-left moderate social libertarian
Left: 1.86, Libertarian: 2.67

I did this test in January 2009 and it told me I am a center-left moderate social libertarian. I wondered whether my views on these issues had changed since January…so I took the test again today.

My Political Views
I am a left moderate social libertarian
Left: 6.58, Libertarian: 1.77

It’s a difficult test because you can’t make decisions in a vacuum; context matters. And all our decisions are tainted with bias, whether we’d like to admit it or not. Another factor that makes it difficult is when you want to tick the ‘liberal’ or ‘libertarian’ answer but know that it would be intellectually dishonest to do so. So you remain neutral, for fear of being outed as a ‘conservative’. Yes, even to yourself. Eep.

This test scores you on how you feel over certain civil issues: personal freedom; government and church involvement in everyone’s lives; the economy; and nationalism.

Go take the political spectrum quiz and see how your views had changed since Pol Sci 101. I’m surprised to see that my views have shifted more towards the left. And I’ve always thought of myself as a liberal. Funny, eh?

  2. Oh, two more things…

    1. It is not a crime to write about yourself in the first person. Use “I” instead of “you”. Own your statements.

    2. Left wing is indeed liberal and right wing is conservative. If you’ve always been liberal, why are you now surprised by your further shift to the left?

I suggest you re-do the test honestly, without fear of being unmasked as a conservative. We don’t need to know the results, I merely want to point out to you how different the real Joy-Mari Cloete is from the person you portray on this blog.

  4. By the way… what’s the libertarianism view on censorship?

  5. Libertarianism isn’t a one-size-fits-all political concept. There are many different — and opposing — views within libertarianism.

  6. Cool. So in the libertarian sub-sphere you occupy, what’s the view on censorship?

  7. I don’t know. I can only give you my opinion on censorship: the worst part of censorship is .

I am, however, for censorship when the material reinforces stereotypes or when it harms children and other vulnerable groups. That’s where the media watchdogs come in. But I’m wary of the government making those decisions for us.

Have you heard of or read Noami Wolf’s The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot?

  8. I’m totally ignorant of the Naomi Klein article, and will Google it forthwith (although, lemme acknowledge that thirdwith would have been preferable.)

The reason I asked about censorship is that Thabo and I appear to have been censored on Digital Immigrant, and so now I’m wondering if you could point to the child-unfriendly bits or the portions in my vowel-deleted posts that reinforced stereotypes (and I’ll let you off the hook for enforcing the stereotype of lefties as other-intolerant so-and-so’s who cocoon themselves in the warm of self-reinforcing echo, while silencing the voices of those who disagree with them.)

  9. Yip, Thabo attacked the person, and not the argument. And sometimes your behaviour is typical of trolls who see no reason and who derail an argument for fun.

You need not google the article — I provided a link in my comment.

  10. First of, lemme thank you for leaving the vowels intact. You don’t know how much this means to me.

But troll??? Hello?? Next time Thabo goes for the jugular, I think I’ll troll silently in the corner, check jy? There’s a difference between “attacking” and “detection,” and I wouldn’t say that I’ve “attacked” your “argument[s]” because I’m still trying to find them. And coping with your ducking and weaving (and vowel deletion) in response to straightforward, sincere questions really isn’t my idea of fun.

The reason I “see no reason” is that you’re uninclined to show any. Now maybe if you substituted logic for diatribe, my vision will be unimpaired. innit?

(We’ve established that I’m a dumb troll, but I still don’t see the Klein link in your comment. So apparently it’s not only “reason” that I’m blind to. Eish!)

  11. Oy, my bad. Here’s a youtube video of Klein’s and here’s an introduction to the book.
